Sxm Dancehall Queen Competition!

Dancehall Queen started back in the slavery days.
Somewhere in the 17th century slaves organized dances at which they elected the best dancer in the sugar cane plantations.
Slaves in every country had their own individual way of expressing themselves in Jamaica they elected the best dancer in the sugar cane plantation, in St‐Martin they gathered and performed what we now call our traditional dance The Panum dance just to name a few.
But the one thing that everyone had in common was dance.
Now in the 20th Century the tradition of dance is still fully alive, with all the existing nationalities there is never the less one type of dance and music that inspire the youths of today: Dancehall.
Dance hall dance moves came directly from our ancestors the Africans.
While many question, every dance move, emotion, and expression were all motivated by the African dances of both the pass and present moment.
Since 1997, the Dancehall Queen Competition is the most awaited event of the Jamaican public.
In one night, forty candidates from all over Jamaica but also the neighboring islands and even America, Europe and Japan compete in front of 5,000 spectators. Of these, half are women. Despised by the elf‐righteous, revered by their fans, the dancehall queens have made a world 100% female in Jamaican society the rules dictated by the men and the Church.

Today, we take back that concept and adapt it to Sint‐Maarten.
However, rather than using calypso music or Hip Hop music our show will be based on Dancehall Music.

And this time we will vote for the 2010 SintMaarten Dancehall Queen.

DJ MAD:
BEST known for his inescapable club anthem “Put Your Drinks Up” and the all out party track “Do The Jersey Shore” – inspired by MTV’s hit show “Jersey Shore” – DJ Mad is poised to break into the mainstream in 2010.

Born in the Dominican Republic, DJ Mad moved to the United States in 1989. He spent his younger years soaking up the musical influences that were the lifeblood of his home country; Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Jazz, Hip Hop, Rock and Reggae… These diverse genres solidified DJ Mad’s dedication to music and he continues to immerse himself in new music to this day. DJ WAXFIEND BIO:

‘WaxFiend the champion you see!’ A sample that you hear a lot in Dj WaxFiend’s notorious set’s and there’s a good reason for that. With his tear-the-club-up DJ sets throughout the Netherlands, regular international gigs, famous mixcd’s spreading globally and as the promoter and founder of Jamrock (one of Holland’s most successful parties nowadays) it’s hard to argue with this.
Dj WaxFiend (born Wesley Texel in 1983, Amsterdam) belongs to the top Urban/Dancehall DJ’s in Holland. He has rocked almost every club and venue in Holland (Paradiso, Off Corso, Bozzini, Tivoli, Jimmy Woo etc) and he is now taking his crowd-rocking skills abroad as well. Different European countries like Germany, Spain, the UK and Sweden as well as Caribbean countries like Saint Maarten, Aruba & Surinam are amongst the list of places where WaxFiend turned clubs upside down.
What started in 2000 as a hobby of a HipHop-fanatic that used to make mixtapes from radio recordings, expanded into his way of life. The addiction really started from when he bought his first turntable. From then all his money and time went into practicing his mixing and turntablism skills and studying and buying music on vinyl, hence the name WaxFiend (‘Wax’ is the material used to fabricate vinyl records, a ‘fiend’ is an addicted person). By studying the origins of HipHop WaxFiend learned about music styles like Funk, Soul, R&B, House, Disco and the music he eventually fell in love with as well: Reggae and Dancehall.
These days WaxFiend’s flavor is a blend of HipHop/R&B (Urban) mixed with Dancehall/Reggae influences, spiced up with a hint of House, Disco/Classics, Soca, Zouk, Rock and anything else that serves one purpose: making you sweat! The combination of his energetic mixing skills, originality, music knowledge and diversity create his unique style that was often imitated but never duplicated. Sean Paul, Ludacris and Jagged Edge are some of the artist WaxFiend has opened up for. He can be found as resident DJ at parties like ‘The Basement’, ‘R&B Diamonds’, ‘Da Goodness’ and has played at well known events like DanceValley, Lowlands and more. Also WaxFiend has done TV-Projects and events for Nike called ‘Panna Knockout’, produced award winning mixcd’s with Dutch artist like Kempi and The Opposites and produced well known remixes and tracks like Amo-Lab’s Dancehall hit ‘Eeenergy’.
His own event, Jamrock, started in 2005 and has grown to be Europe’s biggest Dancehall/Reggae party! The combination of big events and the intimate weekly club night, the weekly radioshow on Holland’s premiere Urban Radiostation (FunX.nl) and WaxFiend’s marketing and promotional skills caused Jamrock to create and evolve the Dancehall/Reggae scene in Holland as it is now.
All this work was not left unnoticed as WaxFiend has been nominated for several awards including the dutch MOBO-Award, and the Urban Awards by BNN. In 2006 Jamrock won the PP2G Award (Holland’s biggest urban online community) for ‘Best party of 2006’ and in 2007 WaxFiend & Kempi where rewarded with a Gouden Greep Award for ‘Best Mixtape’.
In 2009 WaxFiend is busy making the Jamrock community grow while also rocking crowds every week. It doesn’t matter what size club, race, age, religion, sexuality or color, when Dj WaxFiend is playing everybody will have one common interest: DANCE TILL YOU DROP!
